Very true, all the meter vendors have proprietary software which calls for tech support. The firewall at the utility is compromised by the admin access of the vendor. I didn't read the article but can tell you some wild stories if you like. Been there, done that.

Back in about 2003 the utility I was with started implementing "smart meters". I got a call stating that a consumer had been billed 30k for 1 month. High bill complaint for sure. Seems the solid state meters read on pulses, "no prob" I thought. I got to the home, single wide mobile home, gas heat, 100 amp service (you couldn't push 30k worth of power through that service in a month on a dead short). After weeks of head scratching, meter changes and such, we determined that the chinese made TV from wallymart was injecting pulses back on the line causing the meter to register usage at an alarming rate. "smart meter huh"? In the interest of national security, I think I will leave the software and firewall stories untold, you never know who is looking.

Nitris, I'll work on it. My experience with the remote read systems ended about 6 years ago. Not lost info, just a little fuzzy.
I'm still gonna omit the firewall compromise parts. I hope you understand.

Nitris, If you don't mind, just ask what you want to know about smart meters. If I don't know, I'll say so.
Seriously, It's been a bit since I worked with them or thought about them. The questions will spark my memory.

no fear, no doubt, all in, balls out!
