It was my fault. I had never shot a three-gun match, and was worried that field loads wouldn't knock the steel targets over from a 20" open choke barrel. So i did what any red-blooded American boy would do. I loaded up 3" 00 Buck mags and went to work. the malfunction was caused by me failing to rack the slide all the way to the rear (Short-shucking it), causing a double feed. The shotgun is a Mossberg 590 SP 12 ga and I haven't had any problems with it before or after. You just gotta do your part as the operator.
By the way, I ended up coming in fourth in my division because i failed to do a mandatory magazine change with my rifle at the beginning of this stage and failed to engage two targets with my pistol on a later stage. those procedurals, combined with that malfunction, fucked me. But it was a lesson learned and I don't intend to do that poorly in a competition again.
